Professional Development
Seminars, workshops and large group presentations on the following:

Inquiry and Problem-Based Learning

Experience an inquiry and problem-based learning approach to engaging students in identifying their questions about significant concepts within content, conducting rigorous investigations, engage in critical/creative thinking about results and conduct performances within authentic assessment experiences.

Students’ questions stem from authentic problem-based learning scenarios leading to collaborative/individual research guided by major concepts and principles to be studied. Authentic assessments reflect students’ growth in understanding concepts as well as developing 21st century skills: inquiry, problem solving, critical/creative thinking and reflection.

Assessment of 21st Century Skills
Through inquiry and problem-based learning units we can determine the degree to which students are getting better at 21st century skills--inquiry, problem solving, critical/creative thinking and reflection.

Not with standardized tests, but through teachers’ use of direct, long-term, reliable measures of students‘ growth: teacher observations using frameworks/rubrics; journals (electronic/paper); work progress on projects; final products; reflections on own growth.

Antarctic Exploration
Experience stories of the author’s own Antarctic Exploration--posing many questions and communicating with adventurers around the world, meeting Admiral Richard E. Byrd and sailing south to Antarctica on Byrd’s flagship USS Glacier.  Participate in the life-lessons from Antarctic Exploration: imagining the future; setting goals; planning for success; problem solving; building teams; being skeptical, journaling and reflecting. Suitable for students, teachers, parents and grandparents.

Creating Communities of Inquiry
How do we assess our own inquisitiveness and the status of inquiry within our classrooms and organizations? What can we do to develop communities of learning and inquiry?
